Liven Up Your Home’s Interior with These Painting Strategies

by | Apr 30, 2016 | Uncategorized

You could say that paint is one of the most powerful substances on the planet. With its breadth of colors, it has the ability to make something look new or look old, make certain elements appear out of nothing, cover up the unwanted, increase the sense of invitation, and do a lot of other things we often don’t realize.
If you’ve ever seen an artist paint a picture, you might have been amazed by the process. The layering of paint, the blending of colors, the seemingly random but clearly calculated ways the person put the brushes to the surface he or she was transforming seems like a miracle as you watch it transpire. A blank canvas is transformed into a lifelike image through the power of paint when it’s applied with skill.
The same can be said for paint in your home. You might not have commissioned someone to paint a life-sized mural, but the colors you choose and the technique that’s employed have the power to re-create your home in any way you’d like. When you can’t have the real thing, paint is the next best solution.
Designers and artists have known this for years. Michelangelo painted the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in an awe-inspiring fresco that appears if you’re looking straight from heaven. Set designers for theatrical productions employ the power of paint of make a slab of wood resemble a majestic and solid castle from the 16th century.
You probably won’t be needing elaborate works of art painted in your own home, but there are some creative and simple ways you can use paint to transform the interior in a magical way. Here are a couple of suggestions:

The Cabinets

If you have an older home that needs some freshening or could look a little more lively, why not paint the cabinets to achieve a change and get the fresher look you desire? If your kitchen feels small and the cabinets appear dated or are darkly stained, you could try painting all the cabinets white to open up the space and bring in more light.
Light colors reflect more light, so if your kitchen cabinets are lighter colored kitchen, everything else in the space will appear brighter and possibly even feel like new again.
If the exterior of your cabinets is fine the way it is, you could think about painting the interiors. This can be done in several ways.
You might re-color just the bottom of the shelves in a bright shade to add a subtle va-voom when someone opens the doors; or you could go all out and paint the walls as well and make a more powerful statement.
Then again, you could paint both the exterior and interior of your cabinets if you’d like to achieve something completely new and different.

The Bookshelves

Bookshelves can be useful in a lot of different ways. Nowadays, people employ them for anything from entertainment systems to beds or storage.
Whatever you use yours for is your prerogative, but here’s the point: You can paint your bookshelves using the same criteria you apply to your cabinets. Get creative with color, pattern, texture, and technique.
For instance, why no paint just the undersides of your shelves? Paint the sides, paint the rear wall … whatever you please. It doesn’t have to be bold. It could be as subtle as various shades of gray to bring a nice, gentle contrast and depth to the space.

The Walls

This seems like an obvious one, but you’d be surprised by how many homeowners and renters leave their walls white. There’s nothing inherently wrong with this, but it can get a bit boring.
If you’re going to leave the walls white, that’s all the more reason to paint some fun colors into the cabinets and bookshelves to bring more life into your home.
Many people don’t paint because they’re afraid and don’t know where to begin. You shouldn’t let that stop you. It’s easy enough to learn. Read around, watch some tutorials, do the appropriate prep work, and paint the room red … or whatever color you fancy.
You might be amazed by how much everything changes when you put a new color on the walls. To be even more adventurous and unique, don’t stick with a solid color; try a technique like dry brushing or one of these others to achieve some really cool-looking effects that add texture, depth, and intrigue to your living space.

The Tables

If you’re all about that shabby chic look, then the idea of painting everything could be just the thing you’re looking for. If you don’t even know what shabby chic means, then maybe you should learn.
For instance, if your current dining room table or coffee table aren’t posh enough to the point where you would never touch them with paint, then they could be a place where paint would go a long way. Paint the underside for a pop of something special that people will rarely see … or go all out and paint the entire table.
There are many techniques you can bring to this facet of the project. Shabby chic, distressed and rustic, maybe just the tops of the tables and chairs … the beautiful thing is that it’s all up to you and your taste.
